Sensei Tony Hunley, 3rd Dan, began training in the traditional Okinawan style of Karate, Shorei Goju Ryu, in 1990 in Indianapolis, IN during High School. Achieving the rank of 4th Kyu (purple belt), Mr. Hunley’s training was put on pause while he attended college in Naperville, IL and began a career and family.
Beginning again in 2001 under Grandmaster Herb Johnson at his Fishers, IN dojo with senior instructor, Kyoshi Sensei Ken Piper (currently an 8th degree black belt and owner/operator of Family Karate Academy USA on the West side of Indianapolis), Mr. Hunley earned his 1st degree Black Belt in 2004. After a career transition into ministry and the Army National Guard, he moved to Jamestown, IN and began training in 2013 under Renshi Sensei Tim Tucker (6th degree black belt and owner/operator of Lebanon Martial Arts Academy, Lebanon, IN). Mr. Hunley tested for and was awarded his 3rd degree Black belt in Shorei Goju Ryu. He is a lifetime member of United Shorei goju ryu America.
Sensei Hunley is a chaplain with the United States Army. He is currently stationed at Schofield Barracks on Oahu, Hawaii as the Chaplaincy Resources Manager with U.S. Army Garrison-Hawaii. Mr. Hunley has been married 17 years to his wife Beth. They are a blended family with six children – 2 his, 3 hers, with only the “ours” still living at home, their 12 year old daughter.
After being on active duty for two years, and feeling that itch in his bones to continue training and begin teaching martial arts, Mr. Hunley launched Lion & Lamb Family Karate as a unit-based program while stationed at FT Lee, VA. He continued training students when he PCSd to Joint Base Lewis-McChord, WA, and now the dojo continues in Hawaii.
“I am excited to share the knowledge I have collected, as well as continue my own learning alongside my students. Karate has always been a way for me to be physically, spiritually, and mentally fit, and I am eager for others to have a similar experience.”
